Please read my Sales & Advice page for my policy on pianos for sale.
All pianos featured below are the property of private clients and not "stock" pianos. I have no financial interest in these sales except for a small commission (included in the price quoted unless stated) and this page is offered as a service to both existing and new customers wishing to sell pianos. I try at all times to feature a selection of modern uprights at under £1000. Please note that sensibly priced good modern uprights sell very quickly on this site. If you have a piano of this type that you would like to sell on commission, please contact me.
If you would like more information on any piano please contact me by email or telephone and I will inform the piano's owner of your interest. To present a fairness to both vendor and purchaser, prices of these instruments are where possible a compromise between a dealer's trade offer and his retail price. Many clients may therefore consider offers based on these asking prices. Remember that private sale pianos are unwarranted and transport is not included in the prices stated. A list of removal specialists can be found on the Links page.

Danemann 5'0" Grand 1960s
£1,200

Yamaha Clavinova CLP970
2002 model-year digital piano
It's not often I have a Clavinova for sale, but this one is on offer from some clients in central Cheltenham. It was a top-end digital piano in 2002 and has:
88-note graded hammer action keyboard; 5-level dynamic stereo piano
sample; 23 stereo sampled voices with dual voice feature; 128-note polyphony; forward-facing speakers for a clear, full sound and a floppy disk drive and metronome amongst the usual Clavinova features. Of course it never needs tuning (although old Clavinovas generally need key replacements or servicing, so the cost savings here are not what they may seem!) and is arguably a better choice for a student on a budget than most ghastly old Victorian straight-strung uprights, although admittedly not as pretty! This one is in a mahogany effect finish with matching stool. The cabinet is slightly marked but generally tidy, and has an 'upright piano' styling which is easy on the eye. These were about £2,050 in 2002.

Chappell "H" Compact Upright, 1980s
Serial number tbc.
The Chappell "H" was a compact upright similar to the popular Kemble Classic model, but featured a full 88-note keyboard
and a quality Schwander action. This example dates from the 1980s, is in good condition both cosmetically and musically and is comfortably
holding Concert Pitch. One page-stay on the music desk is in need of replacement. it is finished in a mid Mahogany Satin. A high
quality John Austin box-duet stool (pictured) which is generally sound but suffering a
number of scratch marks will be offered free with the piano.
Located in Tewkesbury.

£1,100

Kemble Oxford in Mahogany Satin
Serial number 270885 circa 1996
Originally purchased from Pianoforte of Faringdon, the Oxfordshire dealer for Kemble pianos in 1996, and little used. This is a Yamaha designed, British-built piano in an attractive satin finish and is complete with a "Madrid" type adjustable stool. The cabinet is traditional in appearance with elegant pillars and toes, and is styled to suit British tastes in furniture. Based mechanically and sonically on the ever popular Cambridge model. Three pedals, the middle pedal being a practice celeste. These instruments typically offer Yamaha precision and reliability with a more 'European' tone quality. The asking price represents a huge saving on a new instrument.
Located in Woodmancote near Cheltenham.

£1395ono

J&J Hopkinson Upright.
Serial Number TBC. 1910-1925 approx.
A largely original unrestored overstrung and underdamper piano. Repolished mahogany casework with elegant traditional proportions. Awaiting tuning and inspection, but currently holding close to Concert Pitch. The box-stool is included in the price. This looks to be a good sound piano for those on a tight budget. Further details to follow.
Located in Bishop's Cleeve, Cheltenham.

£650

Welmar A2, 1964
Serial Number 64***
Featuring a beautifully clean design, this is a contemporary cased model A2 in good condition tonally and with a fair life left in the action, but cosmetically rather foxed with many minor blemishes and slight edge-veneer damage to the satin mahogany casework. The piano looks better in the photo than in reality! The blemishes could be rectified by a competent polisher to make a very decent piano, but is on offer 'as-is' in order to facilitate a quick sale and leave the option of refinishing to the purchaser. This is a one-owner piano but has had much use in that time. Still excellent value at the price. Re-polishing could of course be arranged at extra cost.

Repolished Mahogany finish. Rebuilt in 1994 by Musical Instruments (Chelt) Ltd retaining its original ivory keytops. New Abel Hammer heads fitted at time of restoration. Yamaha U1-A
Serial Number 3953573 Circa 1984
A good example of a "grey" imported Yamaha U1 having been previously sold only a few years ago by Musical Instruments (Chelt) Ltd, a Yamaha main dealer who are also renowned for their careful selection of used "grey import" Yamaha. Their typical price for a similar piano of this vintage is now around £3,250. This carefully used piano is in a very smart black polyester finish and is of the type used by many of the world's top schools and music colleges. The vendor will also include a matching black polyester stool and the first tuning in the price.

Yamaha U1.
1989 UK Model purchased from Yamaha main agent
Serial Number 4705153 1989
Originally purchased from Musical Instruments (Chelt) Ltd, a highly respected Yamaha main dealer and little used. This
carefully used piano is in
a virtually unmarked black polyester finish and is of the type used by
many top schools and music colleges. The action and keys show very
little signs of use, and this is one of the last models in this elegant
traditional cabinet style. This model features the revised frame design
(compare interior photos with the other U1s on this page) which was
introduced in the late 1980s, and the build quality at this time was at
an all-time peak.
UK Model: This piano was built in the Yamaha Hamamatsu factory in Japan especially for the UK market. Second-hand
UK market models of U1 are getting increasingly harder to find now,
since the vast majority of used examples of this best-selling model are
so-called "grey imports" intended for other climates, some of which
have led hard lives and which need to be selected with extra care. The
price premium of this instrument over the other Yamaha U1s on this page
reflects this rarity and desirability. The matching "Madrid" polyester
stool is included.
This piano is now not for sale via this site, but is viewable at Shackell Pianos.

Weinbach (Petrof) 109cm Upright
Serial Number 265 803 (1995)
In
Satin Mahogany with minor fading to casework, this is a little-used
piano built in the Petrof factory in the Czech Republic complete with
duet stool and original felt key cover. It was purchased new from
Blüthners Piano Centre in Cheltenham in 1998 and was obviously slightly
old stock since the serial number dates it a couple of years earlier.
It is virtually identical to the Petrof model still in production, features third (practice) pedal and
would be a very worthwhile starter piano package. The piano is not
quite at concert pitch and is in need of tuning, having last been tuned
two years ago and not used since. Budget for a double tuning session to
get it nicely in tune and at A440 on top of the purchase price, which
is low to reflect this.
The
duet stool has box storage and fixed height, and is a British-made
John Austin. These are hand-made in Banbury and a similar item would be
around £250 new.
SOLD.

Zimmermann compact upright
Serial Number 335411
Built in Leipzig East Germany (DDR)
in the 1970s/'80s, this is an ideal starter piano and a better option
than a digital, offering a warm European tone and pleasant contemporary
appearance. Finished in high gloss mahogany polyester with virtually
no fading on the top door. (The orientation of the woodgrain gives the
illusion of fading in the photo) There are a few cosmetic blemishes in
the poly coating on the edge of the lid and on the front edge (keyslip)
of the cabinet, but otherwise this little piano presents well.
The action is even and tuning is stable, although it is currently very
slightly below Concert Pitch. I am confident that Concert Pitch could
be achieved on this piano if desired by means of a double tuning
session.
Located near Tewkesbury, Glos
SOLD.

Steck Upright
Serial Number unknown. 1920s
A well-proportioned upright
having benefitted from a recent action overhaul and repolished casework
by
BASOOP Pianos of Pershore. The stringing is original. Whilst it is
currently holding at concert pitch (a="440Hz)" the age of the stringing
means that continued tuning at this pitch is an uncertainty, hence the
low price. Two bass strings on this instrument have been replaced. This
really is a very good instrument for a player on a budget.
Located near Stroud, Glos.
SOLD

Waldstein upright UP108Dl (purchased 1998)
Serial Number 364455
Offered
in near-mint condition and at Concert Pitch is this very little-used
entry-level piano from one of the best known Chinese factories. This
piano is still in production with only detail differences, and new is
typically more than twice the price of this one. This little piano won
the 2004 Music Industry Association (MIA) awards sponsored by Classic
FM for Best Budget Piano. It is fitted with small front toes so unlike
many modern pianos it is very stable and has a reduced risk of toppling
forward if misused. It is also fitted with high quality castors so it
can easily be moved if necessary. The case is finished in dark
high gloss polyester mahogany of a near-black shade, and appears darker
in reality than the photos. Purchased originally from Derek Cadde
pianos of Chislehurst. Fitted with three pedals, the centre pedal a
practice mute for quiet playing.
Located near Northleach, Glos.
SOLD. Similar pianos always required!

Yamaha C110-A
Serial Number TBC. Circa 2007
A
compact 110cm tall piano with a superb action and Yamaha reliability.
Purchased new from a leading UK Yamaha dealer and in near-showroom
condition, this is a Chinese-built entry level Yamaha piano finished in
gloss black polyester finish. Hugely cheaper (less than half list
price!) than buying the new equivalent (Indonesian built "b1") but
certain aspects of the new model are a slight improvement over this
version. A cheap route to Yamaha ownership nevertheless.
A
far better investment than most new sub-£2000 Chinese pianos, some of
which can be a disaster, both financially and as an instrument!

SOLD. Similar pianos always required!

Eavestaff Upright "French Provincial"
Circa 2002
Only a few years old and in unmarked condition. This is a late-model Eavestaff made in the Yantai-Perzina factory. The design is still a current model, but the latest versions use a higher proportion of European components than this example. The new price is typically around £3,000. The French Provincial style cabinet is in dark red-mahogany bright finish and an adjustable stool in a similar finish is included.

Apollo 128cm Upright
Exact age unspecified, circa 1985
A lovely example of this Yamaha-copy in black polyester finish. The action and keys on this piano are virtually as new as can be seen in the photo. Traditionally styled cabinet. A good alternative for those requiring a similar sounding piano to a Yamaha U1 without the associated price tag.

Yamaha U1-A
Serial Number 3765077 Circa 1983
Another
good
example of an older "grey" imported Yamaha U1 having been carefully
selected and previously sold by Musical Instruments (Chelt) Ltd. Their
typical
price for a similar piano is now around £3,000. This carefully used
piano is in a very smart black polyester finish and is of the type used
by many of the world's top schools and music colleges. The vendor will
also include a basic piano stool (shown) which needs attention.

Young Chang E-112 Upright
Serial Number 1403756
Excellent
condition in Satin Open-Pore Walnut finish. 112 cm height compact piano
in a contemporary style cabinet from a well-respected Korean maker. The
action is Yamaha derived and is positive with a medium touch weight,
making it ideal as a starter piano which could still be usable through
to higher AB grades. Very attractive cabinet finish which is virtually
unobtainable on a budget piano today. Outstanding value at the asking
price and a far better piano than some new Chinese budget instruments.
Model features celeste pedal for quiet practice.
