Piano Tuning in Gloucestershire.

I started my musical education with a choral scholarship to Gloucester Cathedral.   I commenced my training as a piano tuner-technician in 1982 at the London College of Furniture, now the Guildhall University under the tuition of Malcolm McKeand (Bösendorfer UK) and the late Tom Perry (Steinway & Sons), completing City & Guilds of London Institute (CGLI) I and II level examinations in 1983 before graduating in 1985 with a Higher National Diploma in Musical Instrument Technology.  As a student I helped prepare and tune instruments in the Kimball / Bösendorfer showrooms in Wigmore Street.  My education continued with a period of working as a tuner covering the West London area for Squires of Ealing, an old established piano dealership.

Later that year, tired of battling through the streets of suburban London in a Citroen 2CV, I returned to my native Gloucestershire to start my own practice.

In 1989 I became successor to Fred Betteridge, late of Dale, Forty & Co, who had been tuning pianos in Cheltenham and the Cotswolds since 1936.  In more recent years I worked closely with the firm of Whelpdale, Maxwell and Codd Ltd, makers of the famous Welmar pianos and their Blüthners division in Berkeley Square, and the former Woodchester Piano Company.  In order to keep up to date with progress in the latest piano developments,  I became a member of both the Institute of Musical Instrument Technology and the Piano Tuners' Association, having satisfied the requirements for entry into these institutions.  I am currently serving on the Council of the Piano Tuners' Association.

Over the last twenty-four years I have built up a solid reputation for high quality work at a very fair price, and have enjoyed a very high level of customer loyalty as a result.   As well as many satisfied domestic clients, I can count amongst my regular clients many internationally famous musicians, most local independent schools, the best national piano dealers and restorers including Steinway & Sons, Blüthner’s,  Markson,  Jaques Samuel, and Cheltenham Piano Centre. I also undertake concert tuning, and on one occasion tuned a Blüthner Concert Grand for a concert which Herr Ingbert Blüthner himself was attending!

In 2007 I acquired the rights to the historic name of Dale, Forty & Co Ltd., and negotiated the production of limited numbers of pianos from the Yantai-Perzina factory. These instruments are of excellent quality and can be viewed at Cheltenham Piano Centre (01242) 517635.
